Ambassador Huang Xingyuan met with DISY President Averof Neophytou

On June 10, 2020, Ambassador Huang Xingyuan met with Mr. Averof Neophytou, President of DISY to discuss bilateral relations and practical cooperation, inter-party exchanges, Hong Kong national security law, and the Cyprus Problem.

Ambassador Huang spoke highly of the achievements of China-Cyprus anti-pandemic cooperation, and sincerely thanked both DISY and President Neophytou for their strong solidarity with China at a time when China was all out to fight the COVID-19, saying China cherishes the traditional friendship with DISY and is willing to continue to strengthen inter-party exchanges with DISY. Ambassador Huang also expressed his positive view on post-pandemic cooperation between China and Cyprus in various sectors including energy, infrastructure, transportation and telecommunications. He said that the key joint projects between China and Cyprus are promising, and hoped that Cyprus would, as always, continue to create and maintain a sound business environment for Chinese investors.

Ambassador Huang elaborated on the importance of the Hong Kong national security law in establishing and improving the legal system and enforcement mechanism of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) to safeguard national security, while pointing out that external involvement in Hong Kong affairs constituted a gross interference in China's internal affairs. Ambassador Huang reiterated that China, as a good friend of Cyprus, will continue to exert a positive influence on the Cyprus Problem and support the efforts by Cyprus to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Mr. Neophytou sincerely thanked China for providing valuable aid to Cyprus to fight the pandemic, and expressed his full confidence in China for the successful development of the COVID-19 vaccine. Mr. Neophytou spoke highly of China's key role in UNFICYP mandate renewal and facilitating the political process in Cyprus, and looked forward to China's continued strong support for Cyprus. Mr. Neophytou said that Cyprus, as a country along the "Belt and Road" initiative, is willing to actively participate in the construction of the "Belt and Road", expand investment and trade cooperation with China, and further enhance the economic, trade and emotional ties between the two countries.

Mr. Neophytou reiterated DISY's ssupport for China's principled stance on Hong Kong-related issues, emphasizing that Hong Kong affairs are purely internal affairs of China, and Cyprus fully understands China's major concerns on its core interests in national sovereignty and independence.
