Journalist: Recently, elections were held in China’s Taiwan region. What is the comment of the Chinese side on their results?

Embassy spokesman: The Taiwan question is China’s internal affair. Whatever changes take place in Taiwan, the basic fact that there is only one China in the world and Taiwan is part of China will not change; the Chinese government’s position of upholding the one-China principle and opposing “Taiwan independence” separatism, “two Chinas” and “one China, one Taiwan” will not change; the international community’s prevailing consensus on and commitment to upholding the one-China principle will not change; and the historical trend that China will eventually achieve complete reunification and both sides of the Taiwan Strait will get reunified will not change.

Taiwan has never been a country and will never be one! “Taiwan independence” has never been possible in the past and is doomed to fail in the future! Seeking “Taiwan independence” means splitting the Chinese territory. Those who do so in Taiwan will be severely punished by history and by law. Violating the one-China principle means interfering in China’s internal affairs and infringing on China’s sovereignty. Those who do so in the world will be opposed by all the Chinese people and the international community.

Both China and Cyprus have yet to achieve complete reunification. The governments and peoples of our two countries empathize with each other. The one-China principle and one-Cyprus principle are the solid political foundation of our bilateral relations. It is believed that the Cypriot side will continue to firmly support the one-China principle, and understand and support the Chinese people’s just cause of opposing “Taiwan independence” separatist activities and striving for national reunification.
