|Statement by the Embassy of China in Cyprus Regarding Situation in Pyla|
1. The embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the Republic of Cyprus expresses serious concern about the latest developments in the buffer zone. We condemn the assaults against UN peacekeepers and damage to UN vehicles by personnel from the Turkish Cypriot side on the morning of 18 August, as UN peacekeepers blocked unauthorized construction work inside the buffer zone near Pyla.
We express full support for the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) and stress the importance of full respect for its mandate and implementation of relevant Security Council resolutions.
2. The integrity and inviolability of the buffer zone must be respected. Unauthorized construction should be halted. Unauthorized military or civilian activities within and along the ceasefire lines should be prevented.
3. It is hoped that the relevant party demonstrates flexibility and cooperation. It is also hoped that Greek and Turkish Cypriots will firmly hold the golden key of dialogue and consultation, increase mutual trust with dialogue, promote reconciliation with cooperation, and find the maximum common ground from their respective aspirations and appeals.
