On August 4, 2022, Professor Kostas Gouliamos, Ordinary Member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts and former Rector of European University Cyprus, published an opinion article titled "The USA erodes international security via Taiwan" in the largest Greek-language newspaper in Cyprus “Philenews”. In his article, he condemns Pelosi’s visit to China’s Taiwan region, pointing out that her move was extremely dangerous and provocative, severely undermining China-US bilateral relations, increasing tensions and further raising concerns about regional security in the international community. The article refuted the US’ foreign policy of incorporating aggressive attitude, cold war approach and hegemonic mentality, and exposed the US’s sinister intention of turning Taiwan into a conflict front against China along with Taipei 's separatist circles. The article also highlighted that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China, and the historical facts are clear. The one-China principle is the consensus of the international community and is fundamental for the rest of the world in developing its relations with China. Please read the full text as follows:

The visit to Taiwan by Nancy Pelosi, the 52nd Speaker of the US House of Representatives, is clearly dangerous and provocative, as it seriously erodes Beijing's bilateral relations with Washington at first instance and, consequently, generates tensions and nervousness to international security system. Concurrent the Pelosi visit constitutes "external interference", seriously violating China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, the principle of "one China" as well as the provisions of the three China-US joint communiqués. In any case, the Washington's policy of "Taiwan independence" is nothing more than α secessionist plan, like those the USA have perpetrated in various parts of the world. It is no longer a secret that the USA -along with Taipei 's separatist circles- have turned Taiwan into a conflict front against China.

It is obvious that the American policy gradually has turned into a 'black hole'. By incorporating aggressive attitude, cold war approach and hegemonic mentality, the USA`s geopolitical scope is to plunged the region into destabilization and, accordingly, chaos.

Admittedly, in the last decade Washington has been cultivating an aggressive strategy of the "axis to Asia", which essentially consists of tightening (encircling) China through (a) heavy weapon systems sales and/or military installations throughout the region, (b) military expansion in the region by building military bases, and (b) the placement of 60% of the US naval fleet in the South China Sea. For instance, in 2020 the US State Department of the USA approved the sale of missiles and artillery to Taiwan. A package worth about $1.8 billion. It is worth pointing out that in 1979 the USA violated the three joint communiques, by passing a law for its relations with Taiwan. Based on this law, six secret "agreements" were hatched in 1982 to justify the sale of military weapons to Taiwan.

Overall, the international community is witnessing the perpetual American aggression. China is the target of a long-term aggressive policy of the US, which aims both to politically destabilize Beijing and to diminish China's geopolitical power. It is precisely this aggressive attitude and policy that has been materialized with Pelosi's visit. This is clearly a deliberate provocation against China.

Taiwan is China's largest island and forms an integral whole with the mainland. This is an indisputable historical fact that has roots since ancient times. With the exception of only 13 countries and the Vatican, 181 nation-states in the world recognize this reality.

The real status quo of the Taiwan question is the "one China" and peaceful reunification remains the ultimate goal of the People's Republic of China, as President Xi has often emphasized. It is no coincidence that he warned against playing with fire over Taiwan in a call with U.S. President Joe Biden. His statements have rightly signalled Beijing's deep frustration with the escalating USA aggression against China in issues pertinent to Taiwan, Hong Kong and Xinjiang.

Undoubtedly, there is only "one China" in the world and Taiwan is part of China. And this is the consensus of the international community that constitutes the political foundation for China's ties with other countries. In conclusion, Pelosi's visit to Taiwan provocatively revises and questions Washington's own policy since 1979 that has recognized that there is only "one China" represented by Beijing. It is therefore a vital issue for the international community to remind the USA that adherence to the "one China" policy is fundamental for the rest of the world in its relations with China.
