On December 8, 2020, Ambassador Liu Yantao paid a courtesy call on General Secretary of the Central Committee of AKEL Andros Kyprianou. The two sides had in-depth exchanges of views on China-Cyprus relations and the Cyprus Problem.

Ambassador Liu spoke highly of China-Cyprus relations and deeply appreciated General Secretary Kyprianou and AKEL for strictly abiding by the "One China" policy and rendering China strong support on issues bearing on China's core interests and major concerns. He stressed that China remains firmly committed to the "One Cyprus" policy, and will continue to play a constructive role in the comprehensive, just and lasting settlement of the Cyprus Problem. He hoped that the two parties would take the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Cyprus next year as an opportunity to promote the all-round and rapid development of friendly relations between the two countries.

General Secretary Kyprianou warmly welcomed Ambassador Liu to assume his duties in Cyprus and sincerely thanked China for the firm support over the years in facilitating the settlement of the Cyprus Problem. He spoke highly of the significant progress made in the mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries in recent years and China's valuable assistance to Cyprus in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, and expressed his hope for greater development of China-Cyprus relations from a new historical starting point through joint efforts.
