On November 6, 2020, Ambassador Liu Yantao paid a courtesy call on Ambassador Kornelios Korneliou, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus.

Ambassador Liu said that it is a great honor and noble responsibility to assume duties as Chinese Ambassador to Cyprus, as the two countries march towards the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations. China and Cyprus are good brothers of mutual support and good partners for mutual benefits . The two countries have consistently supported each other on issues bearing on each other's core interests, and the bilateral and multilateral cooperation as well as the friendship between the two peoples have been constantly deepened. China attaches great importance to developing friendly relations with Cyprus. I am ready to work closely with friends from all sectors of Cyprus to advance our friendly and cooperative relationship to a new high.

Ambassador Korneliou welcomed Ambassador Liu to assume his duties in Cyprus and said that Cyprus attaches great importance to growing relations with China and values the close collaboration with China on both bilateral and multilateral fora. Cyprus appreciates China's consistent firm support for Cyprus' principled position on the Cyprus Problem, and timely assistance during the initial outbreak of COVID-19 in Cyprus. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus is ready to provide all necessary convenience and support for the work of Ambassador Liu and the Chinese Embassy in Cyprus, in order to jointly promote further development of bilateral relations in a broader scope.

Both sides also exchanged views on bilateral cooperation in various fields as well as international and regional issues of common interest.
