Q: Chinese internet users have widely condemned the disruption of Premier Wen Jiabao’s delivery of speech at the University of Cambridge. Is there any further response from the UK Government and the University of Cambridge to the incident?

A: After the incident, the UK Government and Cambridge University have expressed regret to China. On February 4, Prime Minister Brown wrote in person a letter to Premier Wen, speaking highly of China-UK relations and the important achievements of Premier Wen’s visit to Europe and the UK. Prime Minister Brown said that Premier Wen’s speech in Cambridge was well received and deeply impressive. The UK considers the disruption a matter of regret, which is now being pursued as a criminal matter by the police. Vice-Chancellor Richard of the University of Cambridge also wrote a letter to Premier Wen, sincerely apologizing for the incident. She said that she felt deeply honored that Premier Wen visited Cambridge University under extreme difficult weather conditions, and she believed Premier Wen’s speech was an important contribution to their understanding of China’s development. She expressed admiration for Premier Wen’s dignified and measured way in responding to the incident. She also said that the violent behavior contravened the deeply held values of universities and Cambridge University was resolutely against it.
